The Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) has decided to postpone activities connected to its 125th anniversary in view of the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

“We are all deeply disturbed by the tragic events which have unfolded. The very fabric of our country has been torn to shreds by forces of violence, and not for the first time either. WNPS extends its sincere condolences to those who lost their loved ones through this tragedy,” WNPS said in a statement.

“It would be incumbent on us all, to play the different parts needed to help our families, relatives, friends and countrymen overcome this terrible episode and move forward in a peaceful and reconciliatory manner,” it said.

“This resilient island nation had to do it in the past and is sadly being called upon to do the same again. Let us embark on that journey with speed and resolve. A country not at peace, also makes conservation efforts a lot more challenging,” it added.

The WNPS was on the verge of proudly celebrating its 125th anniversary in different forms in just a few weeks. “Our society is rich in tradition and history, and we had planned several exciting and impactful initiatives in a very inclusive manner. However, the priority is to be fully immersed in empathetic reconciliation rather than these activities,” WNPS said.

In view of these circumstances, most special activities connected with the 125th anniversary will not be held. These activities are the Gala Dinner at Hilton attended by Saba Douglas-Hamilton (12 May), a member gathering to meet Saba (13), the special Safari (14-15), the kids Wetland Walk (11), and our Press Conference (13).

The regular WNPS Monthly Lecture will be held on 16 May at the BMICH.
