Ever since its conception in 1974, World Environment Day has had a special theme relating to the pressing environmental concern at the time. Each World Environment Day is organised around a theme that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental concern. The theme for 2019 is ‘Air pollution’.

Every World Environment Day has a different host country, where the official celebrations take place. The focus on the host country helps highlight the environmental challenges it faces and supports worldwide efforts to address them. This year’s host is China.

Taj Samudra, Colombo has always been a supporter of green economy and environmental sustainability. Preserving nature and preventing pollution is a mandatory topic in the hotel. Taj Samudra Colombo associates along with the in house guests celebrated World Environment Day on 5 June by planting king coconut trees at the South Lawn Hotel premises. Hotel Manager Pulkesin Mohan along with the Taj associates and in-house guests planted king coconut trees in the South Lawn.

Executive Sous Chef Samila and his kitchen brigade prepared mouth-watering vegetarian dishes like tempered manioc and beli mal juice for the event. A few environment-related videos were publicised during the day as an awareness program and articles about World Environment Day were displayed on the Wall of Knowledge in the Hotel. The Taj Samudra, Colombo team went the extra mile to create awareness of the importance of World Environment Day 2019.
