Bentota Beach Hotel won a merit award at the National Cleaner Production Awards 2011 for the service category.

The ceremony was held on 31 January at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo and the Chief Guest was Minister of Power and Energy Patalee Champika Ranawaka.

The National Cleaner Production Centre, which organises this event, is a project of UNIDO for the Ministry of Industrial Development in Sri Lanka and is responsible for promoting the concept of cleaner production. The awards ceremony is recognition and appreciation of enterprises which have performed well in conducting business activities in an environment friendly manner.

Bentota Beach Hotel has implemented many green initiatives on water, energy and waste management that have made it possible in obtaining this prestigious award. Some of these activities include the construction of an ‘Eco House’ which was built entirely using eco friendly material, capturing rain water to wash vehicles and using naturally purified river water for green gardening just to name a few.

The hotel also conducts several awareness programs on energy saving and resource management to further promote sustainable business practices. The resort also has won other accolades such as the Green Globe Certification standard 2011, The TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence 2011 and the Certificate of Crescenting having achieved the requirements prescribed for Halal friendly hotel rating. Achieving this award is a milestone towards reaching its ultimate goal of being a truly eco friendly resort.
