Cinnamon Nature Trails together with American Express Nations Trust Bank and Cinnamon Grand Colombo hosted a scintillating talk by Tony Wu, an expert underwater photographer and naturalist recently. Tony Wu is an underwater photographer cum photo naturalist who strives to create captivating images. He records what he sees and shares such information both for research and on his site for anyone who is interested. His observations and records of marine life compares well with that of a biologist. Tony travels the world, usually with an emphasis on underwater photography, and prefers to visit destinations that are remote, unique and off the beaten path. Photographs, words and videos are tools he uses to communicate what he has experienced and observed. Tony hopes that the tales he relate and lessons he share will have some meaningful, positive and lasting effect upon the people whom he meets and help change how we appreciate the marine realm. This series of events arranged by American Express Nations Trust Bank and Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts titled ‘Discover the World Series’ this time took a twist with Cinnamon Nature Trails presenting 45 invites to the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka. The Cedar room of the Cinnamon Grand Colombo, where the event was held, was packed to capacity with nature and wildlife enthusiasts who were keen to hear this expert  sharing his wealth of experience and knowledge on his talk for that evening, titled ‘All about Sperm Whales’. Tony, with years of experience and imagery that speaks, together with his knack of speech with a hint of humor had the audience spellbound for over 50 minutes that ran out with guests complaining they felt it was just 15 minutes instead. His imagery of sperm whale behaviour from across the world and most rare moments of these amazingly large toothed whales feeding on giant squid, head stands, spy hopping and their social behaviour coupled with some unforgettable experiences shed much light on a species often not seen, and certainly not observed underwater by most. “Cinnamon Nature Trails believes that Sri Lanka can be positioned as the Ultimate Island Safari for the increasing nature travel segment, the terrestrial diversity of the island coupled with cetaceans in our waters gives us the edge to become truly the best Island safari experience, experts like Tony can only help us get there faster,” said Chitral Jayatilake, Head of Cinnamon Nature Trails He added: “We will certainly continue this series of events together with American Express Nations Trust Bank and Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts and enable wildlife enthusiasts to expand their knowledge on whales and other magnificent mammals.” Tony ended his talk by saying: “Sperm whales, which can be found in the waters of Sri Lanka, are highly intelligent marine mammals, with complex social structures, communication strategies, and other amazing adaptations for living most of their lives at depths of 800 metres or more. Having an opportunity to share images and stories about these incredible, under-appreciated animals with friends and nature lovers in Colombo was an honour and pleasure!” Prof. Lakdas Fernando, President of the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society, delivered the vote of thanks to an audience that was much richer with their understanding of these gentle giants of the ocean and said: “We learnt a lot more about these gentle giants thanks to Tony Wu. One of the main reasons why tourists enter our country is for history, culture and wildlife both on land and water. Events such as these will no doubt encourage wildlife enthusiasts all around the world to visit the country and experience what we have to offer.” This event was powered by American Express Nations Trust Bank with Cinnamon Nature Trails and Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts and will certainly see continuity year on year.
