The iconic five star hotel that has graced the southern coast, Citrus Waskaduwa, hosted ‘Waska Waska’, a family off road ride and day out, which recently concluded in full sway in collaboration with the ‘Pedal Pushers’. The hotel lived up to its true promise of being a five star hotel as they provided royal treatment to all its participants with police escorts, backup transport for riders and bicycles, first aid and an ambulance courtesy Philips Hospitals. Even though the city of Waskaduwa has graced the map of Sri Lanka it has not been given its due recognition for its existence. ‘Waska Waska’ was an initiative taken under the purview of the senior management of Citrus Leisure in order to promote Waskaduwa for its true natural beauty and to discover/upgrade its adventurous route into a cycle track. On arrival the riders were treated with an energising kolakanda along with a few natural health supplements and a grand tour around the vicinity. The ‘Pedal Pushers’ have attracted a number of cycle enthusiasts from different walks of life to further the sport of cycling as a fun and adventurous hobby. Off Road Cycling guru and founder of the ‘Pedal Pushers’, Lalanthi Rajapaksha initiated the event on behalf of the cycling forum. Amidst a great number of river crossings, dirt tracks, paths along the coastline and country side, the 34km off-road adventure kicked off in grand style. Throughout the journey the riders were able to come across buildings, bridges and sites that had great historical value such as the famous ‘Kappualla’ anicut, that was opened by the then Agriculture Minister, Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake, which is a 3km pathway from the Bolgoda Flood dam. Thereafter the riders were taken across river on the ‘galpatha’ ferry to the Richmond castle, a century old country mansion that is considered as one of the most spectacular architectural works up to date. Team Citrus even went to the extent of clearing paths through plantations and fields thus discovering new routes that has paved the way to another level of excitement and adventure. Citrus Waskaduwa has also designed this experience into an exclusive recreation package offering it to its customers and corporates as a team building activity thus enhancing its experiences further. Citrus Leisure wishes to thank Lalanthi Rajapaksha, Varuni Fernando and all other members of pedal pushers who participated for the event.
