Dubai’s Emirates Airline this week reduced the maximum size allowed for checked baggage by around 25%, a spokesperson confirmed to Gulf News. An Emirates spokesperson said: “Individual items with total dimensions exceeding 300 cm (118 inches) cannot be transported as checked baggage, and must be sent as cargo or freight. There are no exceptions to this rule. The standard free baggage allowance for all Emirates destinations (excluding Canada, North or South America) as per the weight concept is 30 kg for economy class, 40 kg for business class and 50 kg for first class.” The new rule came into effect from 15 November and the old maximum allowed was up to 400 cm. Tickets holders who purchased seats before this date may be allowed to bring larger items but passengers must obtain approval from Emirates at least seven working days before travelling, the report added.
