Applications have just closed for the second ‘EU-SWITCH Asia Greening Hotels Awards – 2013’, organised by the EU sponsored ‘EU-SWITCH Asia Greening Sri Lanka Hotels Project’ (GSLH) implemented by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. The award scheme is designed to recognise the outstanding environmental performance and the innovative green technology solutions of the hotels registered with the Project. This year, the event has drawn greater interest from the Hotels than last year, with more than 40 entries being received, which is almost a 30% increase over last year. The winners will be awarded trophies at a gala event scheduled to be held in Colombo during the latter part of September 2013. The process of evaluation and short-listing is now underway, subsequent to which, a distinguished panel of judges will study the shortlists and decide on the winners. The awards scheme is expected to strengthen the positioning of the hospitality industry in Sri Lanka as a global and regional hub in Sustainable Development solutions. The Greening Hotels Awards serves as a yardstick for hotels to benchmark themselves against leading hospitality establishments in sustainable business practices. Last year, the overall winner of the SME sector (with 50 or less rooms) was Siddhalepa Ayurveda Health Resort, Wadduwa while Heritance Tea Factory, Nuwara Eliya was the overall winner of the Non SME Hotel sector (with more than 50 rooms and Boutique Hotels).
