The EU sponsored Greening Sri Lanka Hotels Project (GSLH) will be winding up its activities  by end of October, after 4 years of operations.  During this period, the project has signed up over 350 hotels of all categories (large medium and small) and engaged with them in promoting sustainable consumption practises in Sri Lankan hotels. Over 30 training and awareness  workshops and seminars have been conducted in all parts of the island, while   142 ‘walk through’ energy, water and waste management audits have been carried out on individual hotel properties.  Many hotels have implemented a wide range  the recommendations. Project Director Srilal Miththapala said, “I’m quite pleased to look back on what we have achieved in the last few years. I think we have managed to create interest and awareness of good energy & environmental conservation practices among Sri Lankan Hotels. Many hotels have realized that ‘going green’ is not only good ethically, but that it is  also beneficial in reducing cost and creating market differentiation”. Miththapala went on to say, “Certainly the going was not always easy,  and not all 350 registered hotels are moving at the same pace.  A solid platform has been laid, and Sri Lankan hoteliers have now to build on this to make Sri Lanka tourism a more environmentally sustainable industry”.
