The EU-SWITCH Asia Greening Sri Lanka Hotels Project, implemented by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce recently organised a seminar for Sri Lanka hoteliers and Engineers to fully understand the new Energy Management System: ISO:50001 requirements and its implementation.

ISO:50001 is the newest ISO regulations released in June 2011 which encompassed energy management concepts. Heritance Ahungalle, is the world’s First resort hotel to be certified an ISO:50001 compliant.

“While hotels practice energy management and implement various interventions, it is also important to have them recognised and certified; ISO:50001 provides an ideal platform for this purpose,” said Project Director Srilal Miththapala as he welcomed the participants.

He went on to say that from the research done by the leading travel agents, it is found that more than 20% of guests today actively seek a sustainable holiday product.

The awareness session was conducted by a leading Auditor for certifications; Shikhar Jain from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), also the foreign partner of the SWITCH-Asia Food and Beverage Project.
