With tourism being recognised as an important growth factor in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan Government has set ambitious targets to attract 2.5 million tourists by 2016. Though there is heavy emphasis on promoting tourism, there appears to be less emphasis on the environmental implications of the industry. With the objective of looking into the importance of using good environmental management practices in the hotel industry, the Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka (IPS), the country’s apex think tank on socio-economic policy research, will be organising a workshop on 14 October from 9.00 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. at the IPS auditorium. The workshop will be mainly focused around a study titled ‘Environmental Management Practices in the Hotel Sector’, which assesses adoption of environmental management practices in hotels in the Western Province which is funded by the South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE). The half-day seminar which will disseminate the findings of the study among key stakeholders in the tourism industry will also comprise a panel discussion on identifying research needs in promoting sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka.
