Participating in the prestigious ceremony for the fourth consecutive year, Jetwing Hotels was recognised for its tremendous efforts to bring about positive action for the environment through energy efficient initiatives in all their properties.
After an on-site inspection and audit, Jetwing Lagoon was adjudged the winner of the prestigious Gold Flame Award in the Large Scale Hotel Sector category. Well deserved, as Jetwing Lagoon’s efforts and environmental initiatives were recognised earlier this year by the Pacific Asia Travel Association, with the resort winning the PATA Grand Award in the Environment category.
Jetwing Lagoon possesses a unique place in the modern history of Sri Lanka’s hospitality industry, being the first resort opened and also Geoffrey Bawa’s first resort design. After becoming a part of the Jetwing brand, the resort was revamped and expanded with comfort, luxury and the environment in mind – the property now features an absorption chiller for air-conditioning power that runs off the steam generated by the biomass boiler, a first in the hotel sector. In addition, other measures include a 30kW solar photo-voltaic system, 100% LED lighting, and a central solar powered hot water system.
Joining Jetwing Lagoon, Jetwing Sea was the recipient of the Bronze Flame award in the same category. Last year’s winner of the PATA Gold Award for Corporate Environmental Program, Jetwing Sea features many of the same measures and was also re-constructed and launched in January 2011. Jetwing Blue, the first in the Jetwing collection of properties was awarded a Merit, priding itself on features such as total lighting being through energy saving bulbs, hot water production through solar panels and a biomass boiler, along with reusing resources such as water, with waste water being chemically purified and used in the garden areas.
Focus on preserving and sustaining this land
“Our focus on preserving and sustaining this land of ours has always been a priority,” said Hiran Cooray. “We are happy with our efforts, particularly of our Engineering Team and resident naturalists, for their dedication and hard work which has resulted in such recognition,” he continued.
Family owned and in the tourism industry for the past 40 years, Jetwing Hotels has surpassed expectation at every aspect. Building on their foundation of being passionate, as well as the experience of true, traditional Sri Lankan hospitality, constantly pioneering discoveries captures the essence of the brand. Such a strong statement and direction have enabled Jetwing Hotels to imagine, create and manage marvels and masterpieces, where distinctive design and elegant comfort complement each other and the environment.
Considered a priority, sustainable and responsible practice is implemented through the award winning Jetwing Eternal Earth Program; with energy efficiency, community upliftment, and education of earth saving measures to schoolchildren being a few tenets of the Program.
