Burba Hotel Network (BHN), Horwath HTL, and Stiles Capital Events, co-hosts and organisers of the annual Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific (HICAP) have announced that Jetwing Lagoon, Sri Lanka, has won the award for Sustainable Operations at the HICAP 2013 Sustainable Hotel Awards.
The Sustainable Hotel Awards were launched at HICAP in 2007 to recognise hotels in the Asia Pacific region demonstrating exemplary sustainable best practices. The institution of the awards hopes to inspire industry wide commitment to embracing and proliferating sustainable development and operations as standard practice in contribution to the preservation of our global and local environments and cultures.
The official announcement as released by HICAP is as follows:
Jetwing Lagoon, Negombo, Sri Lanka, this original Geoffrey Bawa-designed resort was acquired by Jetwing Hotels in 2011 and thoughtfully restored in line with Bawa’s original plan.
A Green Directory measures environmental performance across ten specified key performance areas including energy, water and waste. Monthly reports and an annual independent audit regularly assess the hotel’s environmental performance.
The importance placed on remaining sustainable through energy efficiency and education is heightened with a wide range of innovative initiatives including a central chilling system powered by a biomass boiler for running the entire air conditioning requirements of the hotel, 100% illumination through energy-saving LED lighting, room lighting powered by solar panels, hot water generated through biomass boilers and all waste water treated via an on-site treatment plant and re-used within the hotel gardens.
The award ceremony will take place during 16 to 18 October 2013, at the Intercontinental Hong Kong. Other winners include the Holiday Inn Express, Hong Kong; Parkroyal on Pickering, Singapore; and Bambuh Indah, Indonesia.
“Jetwing Lagoon is a property which is very close to our hearts, being the first resort in Sri Lanka as well as the great Geoffrey Bawa’s first resort design. I personally hold many fond memories of the place growing up, and winning a HICAP award for Sustainable Operation is certainly nothing short of amazing. As one of the newest members of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Jetwing Lagoon has come a long way with a bright future ahead,” said Jetwing Chairman Hiran Cooray.
Family owned and in the tourism industry for the past 40 years, Jetwing Hotels has surpassed expectation at every aspect. Building on their foundation of being passionate, as well as the experience of true, traditional Sri Lankan hospitality, constantly pioneering discoveries captures the essence of the brand.
Such a strong statement and direction have enabled Jetwing Hotels to imagine, create and manage marvels and masterpieces, where distinctive design and elegant comfort complement each other and the environment.
Considered a priority, sustainable and responsible practice is implemented through the award winning Jetwing Eternal Earth Program; with energy efficiency, community upliftment, and education of earth saving measures to schoolchildren being a few tenets of the program.
