Iconic KumbukRiver continues to be the flag-bearer for Sri Lanka on the global tourism stage with a sixth consecutive nomination at the World Travel Awards’ elite listings.  The internationally-acclaimed eco resort in Buttala bagged the coveted travel Oscar in 2008, winning as the world’s leading eco-lodge and has been Sri Lanka’s first and only winner in the ‘world’s leading’ category.

KumbukRiver is also among the world’s top 10 most unusual hotels and the world’s best destinations for adventurous honeymooners.

Easily Sri Lanka’s most unique getaway, KumbukRiver shot to fame on the back of its primary eco villa designed in the shape of an elephant.

A 40ft, two-storey mammoth edifice, the international media continues to highlight its uniqueness as visitors get to sleep in its belly, housing two massive bedrooms and a lounge in its upper deck.

Tucked away in a truly resplendent nature enclave on the banks of a lively river across Yala wildlife park, KumbukRiver’s 16-acre green sanctuary also houses two other chalets.  Yet another unique accommodation, a two-storey luxury tree cabin on the river front is slated to open in December.  The air-conditioned cabin with a glass front facing the river is expected add a new dimension to the resort, giving visitors both end of an eco getaway.

The Elephant Villa and the chalets are essentially abodes tailor-made for eco tourism enthusiasts who want an undefiled taste of life off the beaten track.  Electricity is used sparingly and even though they have very nice bathrooms and pleasantly appointed bedrooms, they merge seamlessly with the nature that surrounds them, said Movini Fonseka, a spokeswoman for KumbukRiver.

The new tree cabin will be a vivid statement in luxury, attracting affluent visitors who want to enjoy beauty but within the confines of luxury and comfort, she says.  A new adventure course featuring a zip-line and an aerial bridge is also expected to be launched in December.
