In commemoration of World Tourism Day 2016 and in keeping with the theme for this year of ‘Tourism for all – Promoting Universal Accessibility’, Mahaweli Reach, Kandy, Sri Lanka, organised a program to showcase the fact that accessibility to tourism for all includes employment within this sector.
Students from the School for the Deaf and Dumb in Dodanwela, Kandy were invited to witness a bakery masterclass which was conducted by three of its talented, young differently-abled chefs working in the hotel bakery. They demonstrated bakery basics, tips and tricks to cake designing and finally, spent time mentoring the boys and girls on following their passion and proving that their disability does not prevent them from following their dreams.
Mahaweli Reach intends to continue this initiative by instituting a program to invite differently-abled students who are interested in cookery or other aspects of operations, to follow internships at the hotel after their O/L examinations to enable them to decide on a career path. There is a place for anyone wishing to work in the wonderful world of travel and tourism.
