The coastline of Laamu Atoll Gan is to be developed to open the island for mid-market tourism, the Maldives Cabinet of Ministers decided on Tuesday.

A press release by the President’s Office said that the project comes under the Tourism Development Plan of South Central Province presented by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, to start community integrated tourism in the atoll.

Further details on this project are to be revealed by the Tourism Ministry on a later date.

Laamu Atoll Gan is the longest island in the Maldivian archipelago; 7.8 km long and 3.4 km wide, on a north-east to south-west orientation. The island’s population is under 3,000, and hosts several archaeological sites and unique attractions for culture and history seeking travellers.
