New boutique hotel Kumu Beach joins The Sri Lanka Collection

The Sri Lanka Collection has announced the addition of a new Collection member, Kumu Beach in west coast Balapitiya. 

This newly completed high-end boutique hotel by Teardrop Hotels opens in August and will be a sister property to award-winning hotels The Wallawwa and Fort Bazaar. With the inclusion of Kumu Beach, The Sri Lanka Collection – a UK-based representation and marketing company – now represents 13 boutique hotels in Sri Lanka.

Kumu Beach in Balapitiya is a newly built stylish 10-bedroom boutique hotel set in a spacious garden with 23-metre swimming pool bordering the beach. There are three room categories; Ocean View Suites (4), Ocean View Bedrooms (4) and Kumu Bedrooms (2); all are light, spacious and contemporary in layout, and some open onto either private balconies or garden terraces. The hotel is broadly symmetrical and features a pair of elegantly appointed lounges, a long dining terrace, an indoor bar for wining and dining and a long timber sunbathing deck.

The hotel has been finished to a very high standard and perfectly complements The Sri Lanka Collection’s existing portfolio of private, luxurious hotels. The elongated layout of Kumu Beach, with its long oceanfront, makes the most of the sea views. The modernist architecture is complemented by contemporary interiors by Sri Lankan interior designer, Annika Fernando. Vibrantly coloured cushions by noted Sri Lankan batik artist Sonali Dhamawardena and eye catching works of contemporary local art lift the neutral colour schemes of the rooms.

Sculptures by locally-lauded artist Prageeth Manohansa also play a part in the exquisite decor of the hotel.

Guests will be looked after by a team of experienced butlers and dine on a standout menu of international cuisine that champions seafood and local produce. The beach is a nesting ground for marine turtles, and nearby Ambalangoda the centre for southern crafts such as mask making. Other local experiences include river cruises up the Madu Ganga, water sports in Bentota and touring the glorious country estates of famously talented brothers, Geoffrey and Bevis Bawa.

Kumu Beach overlooks pretty Balapitiya Beach on Sri Lanka’s west coast. The nearest railway station is in Balapitiya, and the closest Air Taxi landing spot is in Bentota, 18 kilometres distant. Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo is a 2.5-hour drive and the international airport is 130-kilometres away. Hikkaduwa, a surfing and snorkelling hotspot, is 16km away from the hotel and the World Heritage Fort of Galle is 35km distant, making both destinations easy day trips, by car or train.
