REUTERS: Models strutted on stage to promote tourism in India’s northern Himachal Pradesh state during the International Shimla Summer Festival on Wednesday (4).
Models walked down the ramp during the five-day festival, which is held every year in the month of June to attract tourists to the region.
Organisers received 112 applications from in and around Shimla town, out of which 15 were chosen to walk the ramp on the fourth day of the festival.
“Tourists come here to enjoy the beauty of our state. If we get this opportunity to entertain them too, we make the most of it. Most of the people in India know that Shimla conducts a summer festival in the first week of June. Well-known artists come and perform. It is our effort that local culture is promoted,” said organiser and Deputy Commissioner, Shimla District Administration, Dinesh Malhota.
The models took the event as an opportunity to further their careers in modelling and acting.
“Doesn’t matter if we win or lose, we have learnt a lot. We will make use of whatever we have learnt for this competition and use it in the future,” said a participant, Parul Chauhan.
The summer festival includes various music, dance and theatre programmes to showcase state’s culture and to encourage talent among the youth.
Owing to its pleasant climate during the summers, Shimla attracts a large number of national and international tourists.
