With whale watching tourism is gathering momentum in the country’s southern coastal areas, Sri Lanka’s Ocean University together with a private tourism agency has launched a vessel for whale and dolphin watching in the southern sea.
The Sri Lanka Navy and several private firms also operate whale watching vessels in the southern, north western and eastern seas of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is internationally acclaimed as one of the best locations to watch blue whales and sperm whales. Of around 80 whale species that inhabit the world, 26 live in the sea surrounding Sri Lanka.
Between Dece-mber and April months, the seas south of Dondra Head and Mirissa are known for blue and sperm whales sightings close to shore.
