  • One of triple daily flights upgraded from an A320 to the A330 from 1 November
Qatar Airways has upgraded services on its Colombo route for the second time this year with the introduction of an A330 aircraft on one of its triple daily flights to the Sri Lankan capital. It was just in January this year that the airline expanded one of its daily flights to Colombo from a narrow-bodied Airbus 320 to the wide-bodied Boeing 777. Starting from November 1, Qatar Airways has been operating a combination of B777, A330 and A320 flights on its Colombo route and is bringing a unique flying experience to its Sri Lankan passengers by operating three different types of aircraft on this route. The switch from the A320 to an A330 on one of its daily flights has increased the number of seats from 144 seats to 260 seats, resulting in an increase of 812 seats servicing the Colombo route on a weekly basis. Qatar Airways Vice President Indian Subcontinent, Ihab Sorial said: “This year we are celebrating 17 years of flying to Colombo since our relaunch in 1997; a milestone which is a testament to our commitment to not only the city, but to our customers as well. “We are extremely pleased that we are now able to offer an increase in capacity to the route in order to help meet the growing needs of our passengers. It has been a pleasure to operate in this market over the last two decades and we look forward to many more successful years of operations in Sri Lanka.” Qatar Airways’ global network offers both business and leisure passengers convenient connections to many cities throughout its network of more than 140 destinations. The airline has seen rapid growth in just 17 years of operations, to the point where it now flies a modern fleet of 139 aircraft to 145 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and the Americas. Qatar Airways celebrated its one year anniversary in October 2014, of joining the oneworld global alliance. The award-winning alliance was named the World’s Best Airline Alliance 2014 by Skytrax for the second year running this year. Qatar Airways was the first Gulf carrier to join a global airline alliance, enabling its passengers to benefit from almost 1,000 airports in more than 150 countries, with 14,250 daily departures. Award-winning carrier Qatar Airways was presented with three honours at the annual Skytrax 2014 World Airline Awards held during the Farnborough Air Show in the UK. The airline was awarded World’s Best Business Class for the second year consecutively, World’s Best Business Class Airline Lounge for the second year consecutively and, Best Airline in the Middle East for the eighth time. At the Farnborough Air Show, the airline placed an order for 100 Boeing 777X aircraft, taking Qatar Airways’ orders to more than 340 aircraft with a value of US $70 billion.
