The European Union sponsored EU-SWITCH Asia Greening Sri Lanka Hotels Project (GSLH) implemented by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce is organising its “SWITCH Asia Green Hotels Award Scheme 2013” for the second consecutive year.
The award scheme aims to recognise the enhanced environmental performance of the participant hotels of this project and to encourage implementation of sustainable practices in the Hotel industry in Sri Lanka.
Hotels categorised under “Non SME Hotels (with more than 50 rooms and Boutique Hotels”) and SME Hotels (with 50 or less rooms)” will be judged on their commitment to sustainability, engagement with the project, implementation of best sustainable practices in energy, water and waste management, customer engagement in sustainable practices and any other sustainability initiatives over and above what has been recommended by the project team.
The awards to be presented will be as follows; Best EU SWITCH ASIA Green Hotel Award for the each of the two categories, EU SWITCH ASIA Champions separately in energy, water and waste management for the two categories and EU SWITCH ASIA Merit Awards.
Last year, the event drew great interest from hotels, with more than 35 entries being received. The winners were awarded trophies at a gala event held at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo.
Applications for the competition are now being called for and the acceptance of submissions are extended until 8 July 2013.
Since its launch in 2009, the GSLH project has provided extensive support to over 300 SME and large scale hotels to become ‘greener’ by conducting free audits, training and intervention guidance.
