Seminar on Indian tourism market

Eminent academic Sirimal Abeyratne, Professor of Economics at the University of Colombo, has completed a timely and well researched analytical study for the Pathfinder Foundation, the economic think-tank on the Indian tourism market.

This study includes a detailed analysis of the current status and characteristics of Indian tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka, and identifies a number of benefits from further promotion.

The research findings together with recommendations for both public and private sector expansion will be presented at a public seminar (sanvada) today (Thursday) from 2:30p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management, No: 78, Galle Road, Colombo 3 (right opposite Cinnamon Grand Hotel).

The main presentation by Prof. Abeyratne will be followed by an Industry Perspective by Anura Lokuhetty – President, Tourist Hotels Association of Sri Lanka. Among the other panellists are Chairman, Jetwing and Board Member of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority Hiran Cooray and Dr. Rohan Samarajiva – Executive Director, LIRNEasia.

It is expected that some of the panellists will be discussing innovative and out of the box concepts with regard to promotion of and benefiting from increasing flows of Indian tourist to Sri Lanka. A substantive discussion based on the presentations will take place during the Open Forum.
