Sri Lanka successfully celebrates World Tourism Day

Sri Lanka successfully celebrated World Tourism Day which fell on the 27th of this month, with several events being held in many places in the country, marking the global event. Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau together with the stakeholders of the sector organised several events to go inline with this year’s WTD theme, which was titled, ‘Tourism & Water: Protecting our Common Future’. Accordingly, Sri Lanka Tourism conducted a beach cleaning program, a tree planting program and also held painting competitions for school children. The Sri Lankan celebrations of the WTD were organised under the guidance of Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa. Sri Lanka Tourism was supported by the Bentota – Beruwala Tourist Hotels Association, Hikkaduwa Tourist Hotels Association, Unawatuna Tourism Development Society, National Youth Services Council, other tourism associations and Local Government Authorities in these areas. The Beach cleaning program was held covering the areas of Hikkaduwa, Bentota and Unawatuna beaches. Deputy Speaker of Parliament Chandima Weerakkody and Bhashwara Gunarathna also participated in the beach cleaning program which was held in Unawatuna. Tourism industry officials, the general public and school children took part in the above events.
