Sri Lanka Tourism unveiled the ‘50 Best Tourism Experiences in Sri Lanka’ coinciding with World Tourism Day celebrations held in Colombo.
The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) together with stakeholders of the industry celebrated World Tourism Day focusing on United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) theme; ‘Tourism for all – Promoting Universal Accessibility’ at the Sri Lanka Institute of Hotel Management (SLITHM) on Tuesday.
World Tourism Day, held annually on 27 September is aimed to foster awareness of the importance of tourism, and its social, cultural, political and economic impact.
In remarks at the World Tourism Day celebrations held in Colombo Tourism Development, Christian Religious Affairs and Lands Minister John Amaratunga said the launch of ‘50 best tourism experiences in Sri Lanka’ was an attractive method to ensure return visits by travellers. The ‘50 Best Tourism Experiences in Sri Lanka’ were categorised into five segments such as; best foods, best places, best festivals and events, best activities and best flora and fauna. Blue water lily, elephants, leopards, whales and dolphins were listed under the flora and fauna category, while train rides, cycling, boating, hiking were outlined as best activities. Kiribath (milk rice), hoppers, dodol, kottu, pol sambal were among best food. Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Pinnawala, Adams Peak were some of the best places to visit while, Sinhala and Tamil New Year, Kandy Esela Perahera, Christmas and Nuwara Eliya season were among best festivals and events.
In addition Sri Lanka Tourism also launched a travel documentary ‘Adaraneeya Sri Lanka’, to promote and develop the domestic tourism industry with the theme of ‘Let’s see, feel and protect’ which will bring information on various lesser known tourist attractions in 25 districts in the country.
