The Tourist Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) and the Vocational Training Authority (VTA) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to train more people for the hospitality industry using the VTA network.

THASL will help VTA to finalise the curriculum in keeping with the industry’s requirement and provide the necessary assistance by providing the industry professionals to conduct visiting lectures and provide practical training facilities in member hotels in Sri Lanka.

VTA will also help to create sufficient awareness amongst school leavers, schoolchildren and the general public regarding the benefit of tourism for the economic growth of Sri Lanka and to ensure that a sufficient workforce will be trained to meet up with the challenges in 2016, given the industry requirement of 500,000 trained employees.

With the multiplier effect of tourism, the country will certainly gain much required foreign exchange.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Minister of Youth Affairs and Skills Development Dulles Alahapperuma, Senior Minister of Human Resource Development D.E.W. Gunasekera, Secretary Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development S.S. Hewapathirana and Central Bank Governor Nivard Cabraal.
