Theme Resorts & Spas, one of Sri Lanka’s leading hotel management companies, entered into an agreement with the UNWTO this week to promote sustainable development in the leisure sector of Sri Lanka.
Maalu Maalu Passikudah, the very first private sector investment in the post war torn east coast, converted the once battle field into a tourism paradise. Believing in immediate economic reconciliation to enhance the political appeasement achieved with the ending of the war, the resort has worked tirelessly towards elevating the socio economic and environment factors in the region with its various activities.
These include employing 60% locals in the resort’s operations; conducting computer/English Language classes free of charge for youth in the region with the support of Reconstruire et Vivre (Rebuild and Live), an NGO managed by the Director Board of the resort; and ‘Plant a Coral’ a project implemented with the aim of creating awareness on conserving coral reefs, biodiversity of the sea while uplifting of the livelihoods of the coastal communities in the north eastern region.
The ‘Plant a Coral’ project is jointly funded by Maalu Maalu Resort Passikudah and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with the assistance of Tokyo Cement, the Wildlife Research and Conservation Trust (WRCT) and the volunteers from the University of Peradeniya.
With the ceremonial signing of the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism during the United Nations conference on ‘Tourism: A Catalyst for Development, Peace & Reconciliation’ held at Passikudah on the 13 July, all properties under the Theme Resorts & Spas umbrella – Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa Passikudah, Aliya Resort & Spa Sigiriya, Mountbatten Bungalow Kandy, Scottish Planter Glendevon Bungalow Nuwaraeliya, Maniumpathy Colombo, Wild Trails Yala & Kithala Resort Tissamaharama, Yala – have committed towards further promote sustainability in all actions.
