Ulagalla Resort, which is the only hotel in the country to be LEED Silver Certified has now further strengthened the unique ‘go green’ eco concept by starting its own bio gas project, a spokesman of the holding company said.

Ulagalla (www.ulagallaresorts.com) is a 25-roomed up market boutique hotel located in Thirappane, Anuradhapura, which was once an aristocratic abode and is owned and managed by Finco Group and ICC.

Some of the areas benefitted by this project are as follows: Providing a sustainable solution for solid waste issues; lighting the garden by using bio energy; providing valuable organic fertiliser to the organic farm; making a clean and green environment friendly hotel; decreasing environmental pollution; and creating awareness amongst guests and community.

The spokesman said the capacity of the dome is 15 cubic metres and total biodegradable waste handled per day is between 100 and 150 kg. The venture began on 23 February this year and completed on 1 April.

Outputs include sustainable solution for hotel kitchen waste; six garden lanterns – zero cost street lights; free organic fertiliser for the organic farm and having an eco friendly unit for demonstrations to guests of Ulagalla Resort.
