Kurunegala town was taken by surprise when a brigade of cycles ridden by the newly passed out Tourist Guide Lecturers wearing World Tourism Day 2012 logos took to the streets and ended up at Amaya’s Wayamba Cafe Forest where the main sponsors Dialog Axiata PLC launched the Travellers’ Sim Card to coincide with the event.
A simple ceremony which was graced by members of the corporate sector, Kurunegala hoteliers and guide lecturers being at the venue and as an appreciation to last year’s Entrepreneur of The Year of Sri Lanka, Sandra Wanduragala was invited to the occasion as a special Guest of Honour to add more colour to the event. With members of the electronic media present to cover World Tourism Day held in Kurunegala for the very first time in such a fashion, the theme of this year,‘Tourism and Sustainable Energy’was remembered with the song for the future younger generation‘We Are The World’which came in as a life savour for famine in Africa in the early 80s. As the world approaches a very gloom energy period if countries do not adhere in conserving energy, by 2057 the earth will be heading for a total powerless experience with many natural disasters taking control. As the late Arthur C. Clarke himself described it in his volumes of scientific fiction, we may be facing as what happens in the movie The Day After Tomorrow.
Wayamba Cafe Forest hosted the occasion with snacks and other refreshments for those who participated and Dialog Axiata District Manager Asiri Fernando spelt out the Traveller’s Sim Card and its benefits. It was indeed a total success for all three entities and with the participation of the other franchises; World Tourism Day 2012 was not only a celebration but some food for thought for the future. Sri Lanka hosted the World Tourism Day in 2007 with the theme‘Tourism Opens Doors for Women’which was celebrated in style as our women of six yards of elegance was a shining example for all women in the world. Singer Bryan Adams’ composition of‘The Woman’with a touch of affection and love for all women would have been a perfect finale.
