Lyceum Inter-national School’s 21st anniversary celebration was held recently under the theme ‘Lyceum Reverberates with Echoes from Aristotle’ at Lyceum International School, 3/1, Raymond Road, Nugegoda. Lyceum Intern-ational School was established by its Founder Mohan Lal Grero on 14 June 1993. “Not developing buildings, you are building the future generations for this world”, Lyceum International Schools founder and Deputy Minister of Education Mohan Lal Grero said. Speaking as the Chief Guest at the 21st anniversary celebrations of Lyceum International School, Nugegoda Grero reiterated “In our country we have found that education in English medium is scare. Education ministry is doing its best to train teachers. Also the ministry is working together with the British council and other institutions to inculcate English knowledge but there are people like you who have studied in the English medium who can impart your knowledge one day. He went on to state that “Education is most important, so one day after you have studied and after your graduation you will learn what education is all about. It is very important that one day you can became an educationist to help the world. Education is a base to see the journey of the person from the early childhood. A child is a growing miracle; all of you are growing miracles. You are Sri Lankans. So even if you go abroad for your higher studies please come back to this country because Sri Lanka needs you here. Students of this country need you here. Come and share your knowledge, experience to impart your English knowledge to them, so that if everybody in this country speak this language, including both the Sinhala, Tamil ethic groups, English can act as link language for the social harmony and for the reconciliation. Therefore English is the need of the hour, and you are given this valuable commodity. So, I urge you to teach what you have gathered, the knowledge what we have transferred to you, for the benefit of the next generation. Grero concluded his speech giving a powerful message to the students of Lyceum International School saying that “one must make a determined effort to transfer knowledge to the benefit of society. At least if one can dedicate 3 years of one’s working life as teacher to pass down the valuable ideals and knowledge one has gathered, than I think that person has shown gratitude to the nation”. Grero also said “Being successful is more of a journey, not a destination. The greatest journey in our lives start off with small steps, and the journey of Lyceum began with seven students and four teachers initially. Over the years the number has increased to nearly 16,400 students and 2,200 teachers. For us it is a tremendous achievement. At present we have altogether eight schools – namely, Nugegoda, Kandana, Panadura, Wattala, Ratnapura, Gampaha, and Nuwara Eliya, with Anuradhapura being the latest addition. “We are honoured to say that Lyceum has allowed its students to flourish and they are provided not only with education but with special memories which will last a lifetime. Success is possible to anyone, however, you have to decide for yourself whether you are willing to work hard or not. Dear students it is up to you to understand the value of education and realize that Lyceum is here for your success. If someone is going down the wrong road, he doesn’t need motivation to speed up – what he needs is education to turn him around. So move forward in slow but steady stages.” Coordinating Principal Kumari Grero, Principal Wenuri Hettiarachchi, Director Nikitha Grero, Deputy Principals Bandula Galappaththi, Vijith Fernando, Head Mistress and Dulka Mendis were Guests of Honour at the occasion.
