Commencing your own business at a young age is always a challenge; it’s even more challenging to start a business in a relatively new business sector. Dilini Halvitigala, a young interior design entrepreneur from AOD (Academy of Design) took on this challenge backed by AOD’s global design education and her own determination to succeed.

“Since graduating with an internationally renowned interior design degree from Northumbria University UK, through AOD, I have amassed an impressive professional experience working as an interior designer for Odel and also Westgate International, one of the leading interior designing companies in Sri Lanka. This experience got me ready to start on my own,” said Dilini.

Her practice soon became a success in Colombo, and helped her secure a diverse clientele from corporates, hoteliers and entertainment business professionals. “Becoming a professional interior designer is a rigorous process, and one that requires dedication and commitment from the point of education. It takes perseverance to be a professional in any field and I think the key to becoming a recognised professional interior designer is this,” she added.

Dilini’s work is an enjoyable experience day-to-day: “The night club Fuga, was one of my best along with the brand changing of Union Assurance where was the interior designer for brand changeling, visiting 54 branches across the country. The Singhe Private Hospital in Ratnapura comprising of six fully0equipped storeys and 50 beds, would be one of the many of the fascinating on-going projects that I am working on these days.”

Dilini says that her education at AOD, was the firm base that helped her to build this thriving design business. “All the faculty members at AOD were professional interior designers or architects with a massive international exposure so, they were able to share their experiences with us to get us up to date on the practical aspects in the field. I always strive to deliver a high-end output in my designs – a quality instilled in me by AOD. The degrees at AOD are set to the highest standard; I believe that is what made me who I am in the field today.”

AOD has one of South Asia’s most internationally relevant interior design degrees from Northumbria University School of Design UK. This globally acclaimed degree is delivered in full by an international staff at AOD. “I should acknowledge the hard work and guidance of the academic staff of AOD,” she added gratefully.

AOD provides world renowned design degrees in fashion, fashion marketing, interior design, graphic design, motion graphics and animation along with certificate education in jewellery design and photography.
