All island gold medal to Ruhuna chemistry graduate

A.A.D.D.K. Amarasinghe, who obtained a first class honours degree in the recently concluded Chemistry Special degree program, won the all island Gold Medal of the Inter University Chemistry Competition 2012/2013. This competition was conducted by the Royal Society of Chemistry, Sri Lanka Section, and over thirty of the best performed Chemistry graduates from the six main Universities have competed. This is the second time in three years that one of the Chemistry graduates has obtained this honour for the University of Ruhuna. Wathsala L. Waduge was the Gold Medallist in 2010/2011. University of Ruhuna has been the only university to win this competition twice since its inception in 2001. In addition to Amarasinghe’s achievement, two merit awards were presented to K.K.D.P.D. Godakumbura, and R.D. Rajapaksha. The Awards Ceremony was held recently at the SLAAS Auditorium, Vidya Manderaya, Colombo 7 and Amarasinghe gave a presentation based on his final year research project titled ‘Isolation of natural pigments with potential photosensitising property’ which he conducted under the supervision of Dr. A.S. Dissanayake.
