Thirty seven MBA recipients from The Federation University of Australia in Sri Lanka graduated recently, gaining one of the most prestigious and recognised higher education qualifications available in Sri Lanka. With about 25,000 international and domestic students qualifying through some rigorous programs via The Federation University, which equips them with knowledge, skill and professionalism to productively contribute to their workplaces, The Federation University is a member of the National Unified System of Australian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. It is Australia’s newest university, which has been constructed on the foundation of past successes, encompassing programs that have been a result of a joint venture between the University of Ballarat and the Monash University, Gippsland Campus. The MBA programs as well as other degrees offered by The Federation University are now being offered by The Australian Technical & Management College (ATMC) Sri Lanka, maintaining the same standards and quality that were introduced through its initial program under the University of Ballarat in 2011. Chief Guest, Deputy Australian High Commissioner Sonya Koppe said that education is key to opportunities. “Young people today have immense opportunities all around the world but they need to be equipped with the apt knowledge and skills to succeed.” She further said that this MBA is one of those that adds absolute value to today’s corporate demands. This was echoed by Guest of Honour, Economist and former Director of Economic Affairs at the Commonwealth Secretariat Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy, who while commending ATMC and The Federation University on conducting programs of such high calibre, noted that, “High priority needs to be attached to aligning learning outcomes with labour market opportunities being generated in a rapidly changing national and global landscape.” Welcoming the graduands, ATMC Melbourne Chief Academic Officer Professor Paul Kelly elaborated that this event bespoke the strong ties between The Federation University and Sri Lanka. “There’s been a significant growth in student numbers symbolising the recognition of the program’s adherence to quality and high standards. This graduation cohort continues the tradition of quality MBA programmes where students have been active participants in the courses, sharing ideas and experiences as well as learning from their Professors and fellow students.” The newly appointed Executive Dean of The Federation University Business School, Professor Theresa Joiner stated that Sri Lankan students had set a benchmark for MBA classes. “ATMC is now working to expand and enhance the MBA program and the Bachelor of Applied Management Program, as Sri Lanka is viewed as a major market and education destination for The Federation University Australia.” The 2013 inaugural graduation saw 15 MBAs being conferred, a number which today has grown to nearly forty. Having stringently adopted the teaching methodology of The Federation University, Sri Lankan students are registered directly by the University and all degrees are awarded by the University on completion of the course of study. The MBA concentrates on high academic content and could be completed in 12 to 14 months, differing from other similar programs offered, as it allows students to choose specialisations from a variety of industry fields including Marketing, Finance, HR and Strategy.
