Forging partnerships with universities in the commercial arena

The Human Resource and Education Steering Committee of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) organised a workshop titled ‘Forging partnerships with Universities in the Commercial arena’ on 10 May 2013 at the CCC Auditorium. The workshop was carried out to encourage greater collaboration between Academia and the Private Sector.

During the event, the University of Moratuwa, University of Colombo and the University of Peradeniya showcased some of the work they have carried out for the private sector. The University of Moratuwa Faculty of Engineering showcased projects carried out for Dialog Axiata PLC on the ‘iMoni – Remote Alarm Monitoring system’. Prof. Dileeka Dias from the University along with Ratna Prasad from Dialog Axiata made the presentation.

Another project was carried out along with the DSI Samson Group on the development of the University of Moratuwa’s SIL Incubator. Dr. Shantha Walpolage from the University made the presentation.

Also a work study was conducted at soft drink and ice cream production plants and the logistics department of Ceylon Cold Stores. Nilantha Jaysinghe from CCS and Dr. Himan Punchihewa from the University of Moratuwa made the presentation.

The Faculty of Science of the University of Colombo made their presentation on the projects that the faculty has undertaken for Darley Butler Co. Ltd. and EB Creasy Co. PLC on development of a natural, non-toxic, biodegradable toilet bowl cleaner which is due to be launched soon.

They also discussed work done for Ceylon Cold Sores on development on natural food colour, and a project on value addition to graphite for Kahatagaha Graphite Lanka Ltd., in addition to a research project on water quality for Dilmah Tea. Prof. Thusitha Abeytunga from the faculty made the presentation.

The Management and the Finance Faculty of the University of Colombo showcased 2 projects; a salary survey/restructuring plan and analysis for a public-quoted company and another project for pioneering public bank on a management development program. Dr. Arosha Adikaram from the faculty made the presentation.

The University of Peradeniya Faculty of Agriculture’s Prof. Buddhi Marambe presented a project on bio-fertiliser formulation, phosphate solubilising bacteria mixtures, production of rice bread using up to 50% rice flour and a solar powered milking machine.

The workshop comprised of representatives from all local universities including most Vice Chancellors and Deans of all the faculties. Key persons from the Private sector ranging from a number of industries such as manufacturing and IT were also present at this workshop.

Commenting on the workshop, key private sector personalities felt that initiatives such as this helped the talented youth of this country to contribute to business and engage in real-life working scenarios while giving them hands on experience. Commending the workshop that brought together a cross-section of academia with the private sector it was felt that the event was the missing link that would encourage graduates to join the private sector and put their learning and education into practice to benefit the country.

In the opening remarks, at the commencement of the proceedings, the Chamber noted that it will continue to foster the relationship it has developed over the years with local universities and the policy-makers in the area of education and also be partners with them in making the programs offered relevant and world class.  Further it was announced that the Ceylon Chamber Economic Summit, 2013, that will be held in July this year, will dedicate one session towards making a meaningful collaboration between the private and the public sector a reality.
