What makes AIESEC unique is the youth driven impactful experience that it offers to its members as it is run by young people for young people, enabling a strong experience to all its stakeholders. AIESEC in Sri Lanka is currently present in University of Moratuwa, University of Kelaniya, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Colombo and Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) providing an international platform for its members to discover and develop their potential. They recently held an event themed ‘Global Village 2014’ at University of Colombo grounds. The event brought together over 300 international interns from China, Taiwan, Mexico, Brazil, UK, Indonesia, Australia and Japan that participated in cultural performances, food stalls and share artworks pertaining to their own counties, that led to fostering diversity, peace and harmony amongst the participants and students. This event was partnered with the National Youth Services Council ( NYSC) and the  Informatics Institute  of Technology (IIT) in partnership with many other leading  companies. Bringing all these wide and varied cultures and individuals under one roof, the AIESEC Global Village was a phenomenal success, taking the participants on a ride that covered the whole world. With stalls dedicated to showcase the cultural heritages of 30 different countries and with over 300 participants from the said countries together with over 1000 local participants, this was a one of kind event that managed to capture and deliver the diversity of the globe as a whole. Held on 30 January at the University of Colombo Grounds, the Global village was the outcome of over three months of hard work and dedication from a group of young idealists who are striving to change the world. President of Global Village 2014 Rizwan Mursaleen who is currently an undergraduate of IIT studying BEng (Hons) Software Engineering said” “As the future of the world, we, the global youth believe that experience leads to acceptance of individual differences, creating the foundation for peace. As a humble step taken to expose the Sri Lankan youth to the beauty of diversity while establishing a future that will not see another civil war, the global village managed to capture the imagination of all its participants, with cross cultural learning experiences, international relations and of course, lasting friendships that are more valuable than anything.” Global Village 2014 Vice President of External Relations Ishan Jayasekara, another undergraduate studying BSc (Hons) Information Systems with Business Management at IIT, added: “It was a day to experience the importance of global collaborations, form new bonds and friendships and to socialize with interns from all over the world. We are confident that events of this nature provide support and experiences that unlock the true potential of its participants and offer an inspiring environment for leadership opportunities.” The Manager Marketing at IIT, outlining their thoughts behind sponsoring an event of this nature stated: “As Sri Lankans step in to a whole new era in terms of an economy with a sustainable growth, addressing the contribution of the youth towards the economy has taken the centre stage as a timely significant concern. The requirement of a platform that brings together the opportunity for Sri Lankan  youth to interact, understand and build  relationships with each other and also to get an insight into global perspectives is of great importance. Therefore we at IIT providing educational excellence for the last 24 years were happy to extend a supporting hand to such initiatives, thus being the educational partner at this event is one of our CSR initiatives.” Web: www.iit.ac.lk; email: [email protected]; hotline: 0722727272.
