Internationally recognised education in photography at the Academy of Design

Photography is an essential sector for mass-communication, tourism, medical, advertising, fashion, investigation spheres and many other sectors across society. In recent times, Sri Lanka’s photography industry has undergone rapid growth, with the Government’s slash of taxes on camera equipment in June 2010, the spread of the use of social media and other web applications and modes have contributed to these developments. In such times, establishing globally accepted standards of education in photography is essential.

As a pioneering educator in creative arts, the Academy of Design (AOD) has taken on the challenge of producing proficient photographers for the future. AOD will be awarding a ‘Higher Certificate in Photography’ in collaboration with one of UK’s finest photography academia – Bradford College. The head of photography — Bradford College and noted British photographer Trevor Griffiths and Ronnie Todd - Project Manager - Bradford College, visited Sri Lanka to announce the launch of the programme. Speaking to a media gathering at the AOD,  Griffiths mentioned that today’s global photography is firm on copyrights, intellectual property and the moral background of the trade and went on to mention that providing exposure to this aspect of the industry is crucial. “This programme will allow students to complete a full curriculum within a short time and enable photographers already in the industry to learn more and validate their craft as well as offer them the opportunity to further enhance their skills by transferring to Bradford College – UK.”

Kesara Ratnavibhushana, renowned photographer and senior lecturer at the Academy of Design also addressed the gathering. He pointed out that the many professionals from different fields turn to photography as a creative outlet and that amateurs wishing to pursue a career in photography add to the large number of photography enthusiasts in the country, and that this programme is ideal for them. “This is a very exciting time in the country, especially in the creative industries because this programme will have a tremendous impact on both amateurs and professionals”, he added. AOD will collaborate with Canon- Metropolitan to set up a state-of-the-art photography studio in the near future. Taslim Rahaman – CEO/Director of Metropolitan Office (Sole Agents for Canon in Sri Lanka), opined that as a brand that supports development of skills and competencies, they feel privileged to support Sri Lanka’s first internationally accepted photography programme.
