Introduce both arithmetic and math for G.C.E. (O/L)?

According to media reports, Education Minister Bandula Gunasekere has said that every year 50% of the students who sit for the G.C.E. (O/L) Examination come down in math. Therefore, half the numbers of students are unable to do their A/Levels. I suggest that we introduce two sets of question papers – one will be arithmetic only (to be offered by students who are weak in mathematics) and the other mathematics (which will include arithmetic, algebra and geometry for the bright-eyed students). This will then enable more students to get through the existing math hurdle and allow them to continue their studies instead of dropping off halfway through their academic career.
