Jaffna Engineering Faculty to be established in Kilinochchi

Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda, chairing a discussion held at the Agriculture Faculty of Jaffna University in Ariyavil City on 7 September, said that action would be taken to commence the Agriculture Faculty next month and the Faculty of Engineering as soon as possible.

The Minister had this discussion with the heads of the relevant faculties of the University of Jaffna to discuss the issues that stood in the way, causing delays.

It was revealed at the discussion held that the Government Agent of Kilinochchi had received two tractors to be utilised to provide drinking water and to attend to the other work in connection with the commencement of studies at the Faculty of Agriculture.

It was also brought to notice that the water tanks and water pumps costing Rs. 400,000 had been bought with money given by the Minister.

The Minister, touching on the subject of demining of the university premises, instructed the relevant agency to quicken the process, and in addition organised a massive ‘Shrama Dana’ campaign with the student to clean up the premises.

The Minister also instructed the sectional heads to explore the possibility of commencing studies of the Engineering Faculty temporarily at buildings suitable for the purpose elsewhere in the city at the beginning of the next year and stressed on the importance of working as one in this regard. The Minister paid a visit to Maha Deva Children’s Ashram building complex to see whether these buildings possessed the facilities to house the engineering faculty there temporarily.

Murugesu Chandrakumar, Jaffna District MP and Deputy Chairman of the Committees of Parliament; Dr. Vikunthan, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Jaffna University; Prof. Kandasamy, Dean of the Faculty of Science; Prof. Balasundaramplillai; and Thavanathayan, Organiser EPDP, Kilinochchi District also participated at this discussion.
