Kelani Cables ventures Jaffna with Kelani Saviya

Kelani Cables PLC signed an MOU recently with the Jaffna University, joining hands to expand ‘Kelani Saviya’ services. This historic MOU was signed at the Kelani Cables auditorium by Kelani Cables PLC CEO Mahinda Saranapala and the Jaffna University Vice Chancellor Senior Prof. Vasanthi Arsaratnam. Kelani Cables General Manager (Marketing) Anil Munasinghe and University of Jaffna Dean of Engineering Faculty Dr. A. Athputhurajan signed as witnesses. Kelani Cables PLC, Sri Lanka’s champion brand of secure electrical and communication cables has been conducting the ‘Kelani Saviya’ CSR program in association with the engineering faculty of the Peradeniya University since 2007. The program is designed to enhance skills of self employed electrical technicians and to groom school leavers to become electrical technicians. The only criterion to enroll with Kelani Saviya training program is to have GCE ordinary level qualifications. Saranapala was determined to expand ‘Kelani Saviya’ services to other locations in the country as well including the North and South to brighten up lives of those apprentices. Thus he extended a constant invitation to all universities in Sri Lanka to join hands with Kelani Cables in this endeavour. Kelani Saviya the brainchild of Prof J.B. Ekanayake of Peradeniya University was commissioned in 2007 with the signing of the MOU between Peradeniya University former Vice Chancellor Prof S.B.S. Abeykoon and Hemantha Perera, former managing director of Kelani Cables. According to the stipulated terms and conditions, the MOU was to end in 2012. However, due to fruitful discussions took place between Saranapala and the University authorities; the program was extended for a further period of five years that is till 2017. Novices and students who have left school who look forward to self employment are very attracted to the Kelani Saviya electrical training program. Kelani Saviya has already introduced to the country a breed of over 200 talented and skilled youth. Many of these youngsters are already employed in local and foreign companies and have established stability in life. Kelani Saviya is the only training program which intimates an internationally recognised University certificate to successful candidates who posses only GCE ordinary level qualifications. This is the first time ever a local university has collaborated with a private sector entity to launch such program. A jubilant Kelani Cables PLC CEO said, “Although Kelani Cables Company engages in various CSR programs throughout the year, Kelani Saviya CSR program is unique to our company. School leaving students and novices who aspire to become electrical technicians are given an opportunity by Kelani Saviya to gear themselves with the knowledge of domestic and industrial wiring and installation. In addition, they are intimated with a globally acceptable certificate.” Saranapala further stated, “Extending this Kelani Saviya career development program to Jaffna would add a great impact towards nurturing cordial relationships with different ethnic groups in the country at this crucial juncture. Now the youth in the North can benefit from this program.” Kelani Cables PLC CEO paid his gratitude to Peradeniya University Engineering faculty for initiating this program and expressed his desire to take Kelani Saviya to other universities in the country as well.
