The Serendib Schools Development Foundation (SSDF), an institution established in the 2011, has undertaken to develop Dharussalaam College situated at Jummah Masjid Road Maligawatte.

Dharussalaam was a neglected school, while there are around 12,000 families living in the Maligawatta area. The aim of the school is to educate the children of Maligawatte for the benefit of the Muslim community and progress through an Islamic perspective and to produce outstanding students.

“In the past Maligawatte Muslims had so many murderers, drug addicts, criminals and gangsters, which have gradually improved. Even today when the name Maligawatte is mentioned people look negatively. There are more than 10,000 Muslim families living in this area, and over 50% are poor, nearly 20% of them are very poor. Sending a child to school is a big issue,” a spokesman said.

SSDF was initiated by the SSDF’s two Joint Chairmen Fouzul Hameed (Chairman Board of Governors – Zahira College) and Fazal Issadeen (Chairman/MD – Datamation Systems), together with Rizwie Niyaz (Secy. Board of Governors – Zahira College), Jisthy Fawmy (VP – Zahira OBA), Hilal Sanoon (Secy. Zahira – OBA), Alavi Mukthar and M.N.M. Nizam (Members – Zahira OBA).

They decided to form SSDF to support the small schools. They also extend support to underprivileged schools for the furtherance of imparting education and uplifting the standard of education, discipline and infrastructure of dwelling schools in and around the Colombo District, with special focus on the Muslim schools.

The SSDF, with the support of the PPA of Dharussalaam and the Masjid Federation of Maligawatte, is working to find a solution for the children of Maligawatte.

“These children need good guidance, education, counselling and medical support to make them better and reduce the burden on society,” the spokesman said.

The launch of Dharussalaam College Students Education Foundation and Development will be held on Sunday 15 July at the college premises at 10:30 a.m.
