A little known school from the backwoods of Kandy sprung into limelight with 14 students passing the Year 5 scholarship examination, including the country’s top achiever.

Their humble celebrations took on a new dimension as the country’s trailblazer in finance LB Finance surprised the school with a day to remember. A special highlight was the company’s efforts to recognise the role played by teachers.

The financiers came calling with thoughtful gifts not just for the 14 child stars but for 40 teachers instrumental in bringing the spotlight on Thalathuoya Junior School, a small school from Kandy.

“You could call it one of those special days at work. Here was a school which lacked even basic facilities.  But an inspired effort from teachers saw an unbelievable result. We were overwhelmed by their response. They were delighted to see a senior corporate citizen at their door,” said Niroshan Udage, Executive Director of LB Finance.

“Exemplary teachers often go unnoticed as star students bask in glory. So we made a special effort to not just recognise their dedication but highlight it as an inspiration to all teachers,” he said.

LB Finance also donated a Duplo machine which would greatly enhance the capacity-building efforts of the school. This was done on a special request by the faculty.

Anjali Maduwanthi with 196 marks topped the all-island list at the Year 5 scholarship along with another student from Galle. One hundred students sat for the exam from the junior school with an impressive 14 getting through.

“Over 30,000 students sat for the exam and getting 14 students over the line is a proud moment for not just us but for the entire Kandy District. It has been a difficult journey and we are extremely happy that a corporate giant has come forward with much needed inspiration and support,” Muthubanda, Principal of Thalathuoya Junior School.

“We strive to be an integral part of our social fabric as a responsible corporate citizen. The amazing feat of this small school is an inspiration for the whole country and we will continue to recognise and support such efforts,” LB Finance stated.
