The ‘Open Mic Poetry Slam’ contest has been a huge hit at the American Center since its inception in 2012. At each slam, contestants enthrall the audience with their performances reminiscent of open-mic poetry slams in the United States. Winners are awarded with certificates, prizes and free lifetime membership to the American Center Library in Colombo and to American Corners in Kandy and Jaffna. ‘Season XVII’ of the contest will be held on Thursday, 29 May at the American Center auditorium at No. 44, Galle Road, Colombo 3. The ground rules to compete in the event are simple: All work must be original and all ages may participate and can share poetry in any local language (English/Sinhala/Tamil). The American Center will continue to serve as a platform for talented Sri Lankans to express themselves freely and creatively by hosting an ongoing series of poetry slam competitions every other month. Youth are encouraged to participate. The photos and video clips of the events are posted on Embassy’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Colombo.USembassy For more details and free registration, call Nowzad at the American Center at 249 8128, or email [email protected].
