Over 2,800 diploma holders receive teacher appointments

 Government ensures quality education for all: President

“The Government has taken more number of steps than any other government to uplift the country’s education sector and new streams are being introduced to the education system,” said President Mahinda Rajapaksa speaking at the ceremony held to present over 2,800 teacher appointments to diploma holders of National Colleges of Education at Temple Trees, 22 Monday.

He said the Government is taking steps to arrest the teacher shortage in order to uplift the country’s educational standards. He pointed out that over 53,000 graduates were recruited as teachers and Mahindodaya laboratories are being built in many schools.

He also said the school curriculum has got new subjects that cater to the present day needs and the Government has already started the University of Technology and the Ocean University of Sri Lanka. He said he is happy to see an increase in the number of students enrolling for university education in Sri Lanka each year.

President Rajapaksa emphasised that society expects the teachers to mould the students to a well disciplined generation and it is the responsibility of the teachers to show them the right path.

Students in the country’s rural areas have shown good results at the GCE Ordinary Level and Advanced Level as well as Year 05 scholarship examinations. This shows that the standard of education in Sri Lanka’s rural areas is increasing rapidly due to the great enthusiasm shown by parents and teachers to educate the younger generation, he added.

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena, Educational Services Minister Duminda Dissanayake, Governors of Sabaragamuwa and Northern provinces W. J. M. Lokubandara and G.A.
