Due to popular demand, Pearson-Edexcel successfully hosted a leadership workshop for student prefects on 23 October at the BMICH. Themed ‘Inspiring tomorrow’s leaders today’ the event followed from the success of a previous program held in 2012. Pearson-Edexcel firmly believes in the importance of cultivating leadership qualities, beyond achieving academic excellence. Therefore, in addition to the regular qualification awareness programs and principals’ forums they organise, Pearson-Edexcel periodically holds leadership programs in order to encourage students to be well-rounded. The workshop was tailored towards Advanced Level prefects to create awareness about the essentials of leadership and teamwork. It also aimed to provide assistance in transforming them into successful and contributing members of society. Several students who attended the session said they had gained valuable advice from the experience. “This training was very useful for us. It motivated us to influence our peers to be leaders as well and I wish that there would be another session like this,” said P. Goushique Jonathan from Eastern International College in Batticaloa. Others praised the interactivity of the session. “What I liked most about the training was the involvement of all the students in the activities. I had a great time here. I enjoyed all the activities and I hope it will help me to go a long way in the future,” commented Thubiga Jeyaseelan from Angel International School in Manipay, Jaffna. “It was impressive and a lot of useful advice was given. I am grateful that there is an organisation like this to help make better leaders in the future and I’m also grateful for getting an opportunity to experience it,” said Uvindi Jayathilake, a participant from Asian International School. The leadership program was conducted by leadership trainers David Shaw and Matthew Anderson. Shaw currently serves as President of the Unicorn Applied Research Collaboration (Unicorn ARC), a think-tank that delivers solutions in leadership, organisation, change and influence, as well as trauma, negotiation and crisis. He is also a visiting professor at the Aberdeen Business School, part of the Robert Gordon University and lectures on their MBA course. Anderson is the Vice-President for Unicorn ARC. He has been engaged in international leadership development and organisational influence for many years in different sectors.  For more information contact the Edexcel Country Office on 0112391103.
