Wickremesinghe said this while speaking at the school, following the opening of the new Edex classroom complex there. “We are hoping to develop other schools as well because it is not only Royal College which should be developed. Therefore resources should be divided amongst other schools too and we must raise funds for these projects,” he asserted. Wickremesinghe added that improving teacher quality was very important for the Sri Lankan education system, even more than developing physical resources. “The nature of the Sri Lankan education system is changing every day. As the Government of Sri Lanka, we are always trying to make new changes in the country while facing challenges. However, our education policies are mainly focused on improving the quality of teachers,” he said. He went on to explain that Sri Lanka should improve its technology to be successful in the educational stream like other Asian countries such as China and Japan. “We have to utilise the technology which is needed for students to continue their studies successfully. The laboratories and libraries we have in schools today are not enough,” he pointed out. Wickremesinghe also stated that Royal College should not exceed its current student population of 8,000 and if possible try to reduce this number.
