Chamindu Amarasinghe of Lyceum International School Panadura recently became Scholarships for USA Ltd’s first student to major in Physics and its latest entrant into Valparaiso University in Indiana. Chamindu was recently informed by Cambridge that he had become Sri Lanka’s first place student in Physics and Chemistry and second on aggregate in three other subjects. Lyceum-Panadura Principal Malith Kumarasinghe joins Priyanthi and Padmasena Dissanayake of Scholarships for USA to congratulate Chamindu Amarasinghe   SUSA, which has provided more than 300 students from all corners of the island with amazing financial aid packages during the last 13 years, was able to secure nearly 10 very competitive and generous offers for Chamindu in record time. He selected the offer of Valpo due to its quality education, internships - which are not only limited to the US - top scholarships and generous credit transfers which may save him almost a year. “Regarding our Physics program, Chamindu should know that our degree program prepares students for a wide variety of exciting career paths by emphasising rigorous mathematical analysis and conceptual understanding of physical phenomena, experimental testing of theoretical predictions by sophisticated data acquisition and analysis, the development of research skills as a member of a team and the communication of scientific results both orally and in written form. Currently some of our Physics alumni are in graduate school at the University of Illinois, University of Washington, Vanderbilt University and many more, working as physics instructors, conducting research and working for the military,” said Associate Director for International Admissions Laura Coleman. “Every summer many of our physics majors enjoy the opportunity to work with faculty at VU and elsewhere on cutting-edge physics and astronomy research. There is a stipend and free housing but more importantly, students get a taste of what it’s like to do research (such an important skill to highlight when students later apply to graduate programs or jobs). Currently research is being undertaken on our campus in the following disciplines: Atmospheric Physics, Computational Condensed Matter, Nuclear and Particle Physics and Nanoscience.” Lyceum Panadura Principal Malith Kumarasinghe said: “To produce global citizens who will reshape the future of their motherland, this is the vision of the founder of the Lyceum Group of International Schools. We believe that our relationship with our pupils is a lifelong one that does not end the day they leave our gates. We also believe that our youth need to be armed with global education and contemporary skills so that they can make Sri Lanka a nation that is flourishing both economically and socially in the 21st Century. To enable this we ensure that our students get the best possible higher educational opportunities in the market so that they can become global level leaders who can become agents of change. More importantly, it is our greatest joy to see them reach their maximum potential and lead a life that is successful.
