UK increases number of Chevening scholars from Sri Lanka

The UK has announced a significant increase in the number of Chevening Scholars from Sri Lanka, British High Commissioner James Dauris announced at a reception to mark the departure of this year’s Chevening Scholars ahead of their travel to study at prestigious UK universities. The reception was attended by scholars, Chevening Alumni and other invited guests. The High Commissioner presented certificates to this year’s scholars to mark their selection for the Chevening program. Chevening is the British Government’s most prestigious scholarship scheme for foreign post-graduate students. It aims to enable current and future leaders, decision makers and opinion formers to study in the UK and equip them to make a positive contribution to their own countries upon their return. Congratulating this year’s Chevening scholars, the High Commissioner said: “I am delighted that we have a significant increase in the number of Chevening Scholarships we are able to offer to current and future leaders from Sri Lanka. The opportunity for some of Sri Lanka’s most talented students to study in the UK benefits both our countries. Education is key to increasing understanding and maintaining and developing the long-established bonds between us.” Looking ahead to the 2016/17 applications, Tom Soper, Chevening Officer for Sri Lanka and Maldives said: “Established in 1983, Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s leading global scholarship program, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and partner organizations. As this year’s scholars head off to the UK to begin their studies, I am pleased to announce that the Chevening Scholarships application window for 2016/17 is now open. We are looking for ambitious and academically strong young professionals who have displayed leadership potential. If this is you then winning a Chevening Scholarship would be an incredible development opportunity for you. The six successful Chevening Scholars from Sri Lanka for this year

Myanthi Peiris, who will be reading for an MSC in Social Policy and Development at the London School of Economics.

Vignaraja Sanjendra, who will be reading for an LLM in Human Rights Law at Queen Mary, University of London 

Bernadette Aponso, who will be reading for an MPhil in Finance and Economics at the University of Cambridge.

Erangi Merinnnage De Costa, who will be reading for a MSC in Finance and Investment at the University of Edinburgh

Meegodage Perera who will be reading for an MSC in Business Analytics at the University of Warwick

Annemari Suranthi De Silva who will be reading for an MA in South Asian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London.
