Unity Mission Trust conducts successful parallel event at WCY2014

Unity Mission Trust (UMT) was invited to conduct a parallel event at the recently concluded World Conference on Youth (WCY 2014) that was held from 6 to 10 May at the BMICH, Colombo. Organisations were selected and invited to conduct parallel and side events at WCY2014 based on their work with youth in relation to one of the fourteen themes and foundations discussed at the conference. UMT was selected on their work relating to the theme of ‘Realising Peace, Reconciliation and Ending Violence’, giving the participating local and international delegates the chance to learn from the experiences of those involved in grassroots level reconciliation, integration and unity work in Sri Lanka. Three young leaders were nominated by the UMT core team to speak and share their experiences to the attendees. The speakers were UMTs National Youth Leadership Council Secretary Shehani Rajendra, UMT National Youth Leadership Council President Prunthaban Gunaraja and National Youth Leadership Council Co-Secretary of Projects Elon Newton. The event was a remarkable opportunity for UMT to share the great achievements and milestones they have in shaping young men and women – in instilling in them the knowledge that they are all equal and valuable sons and daughters of a beautiful Mother Lanka whilst also sharing their own personal experience on the field. The UMT is currently structured as non profit voluntary organization govorened by board of truztees, an Executive Management team, an operations team and poola pool of around 60 volunteers who are available to support ground level projects. In addition, UMT is stregthend by regional youth leadreship councils that have been set up in 9 diffrent provinces and a National Youth Leadership Council that links togetjer regional councils. UMT also has a group of senior consultants,who are mostly retired senior Education Officers, who have volunteered their time towards the work of Unity Mission Trust. UMT in addition to its leadership programs also conducts English Classes in the Wanni and as well as runs an has in place an educationalscholarships schemes for outstanding student leaders from the Wanni. Further, UMT encourages and partakes in the development of the skills of these young leaders so that they will then understand and accept their status as equal sons and daughters of a beautiful Mother Lanka and move forward united as one, to build a new Sri Lanka, a Sri Lanka that has the strength of all her its people, heralding in the most wonderful part of our history. UMT now has over 4500+ students from all parts of the country who are linked together in a network of Unity and friendship, who will be ready to become the new leaders of peace in the near future.
