University of Colombo excels at CIMA Global Business Challenge 2014

The CIMA Global Business Challenge 2014 was held successfully for the 6th consecutive year on the 21 June at the CIMA Sri Lanka Division. This year, 43 teams comprising of undergraduates from 14 universities from Sri Lanka registered for the competition. ‘Corporate Consultants’ and ‘Momentum’ representing University of Colombo and the ‘Team Elite’ and ‘Serendib’ representing the University of Moratuwa qualified for the country finals. These four teams presented their analysis on a CIMA case study which was then followed by a Q&A session with the panel of judges. All four teams closely contested and brought out the innovative ideas and recommendations to prove themselves to be the future business leaders. The panel of judges was chaired by Candor Group CEO/Director Ravi Abeysuriya and NDB Investment Bank Head of Capital Markets Senaka Kakiriwaragoda and Colombo Dockyards Head of Marketing Prince Lye were the other two judges of the panel. After a tough battle, the Corporate Consultants of the University of Colombo, a team comprising of four passionate undergraduates; Samanmalie Herath, Praveen Samarakone, Bhagya Awanthie and Sanka Abeysirigunawardena became the winning team at the Sri Lanka finals of the CIMA Global Business Challenge 2014. Praveen Samarakone was awarded the ‘Overall Best Speaker’ of the CIMA GBC 2014 for his enthusiastic speaking skills highlighted during the presentation. Team Elite from the University of Moratuwa became the 1st runner up while the team Momentum from the University of Colombo won the 2nd runner up. The 3rd runner up position was awarded to team Serendib from the University of Moratuwa. The competitiveness, enthusiasm and the excitement undoubtedly portrayed the true inspiration of young leaders who are ready to take up the future business world. The winning team ‘Corporate Consultants’ will fly to Mumbai, India to represent Sri Lanka at the Global Finals which will be held from 4 to 8 August. They will compete against 23 other countries for the title of Global Champions of the CIMA Global Business Challenge. CIMA GBC is designed to bring out the best in the young business leaders of tomorrow and it provides undergraduates an exposure to the business world and is set up with the objective of identifying the potential business leaders among undergraduates in Sri Lanka. We congratulate all the four finalists and wish ‘Corporate Consultants’ all the very best to outshine Sri Lanka at the World Finals.
