Zahira College reflects on ‘Past Glories and a Way Forward’

The Zahira College Colombo Social Welfare and Counselling Unit organised a public lecture on Reflection of the Past Glories of Zahira College and a Way Forward at the Abdul Gaffoor Hall recently. 

Speaking on the occasion the Guest Speaker of the Jamiah Naleemiah Institute Director and distinguished old boy of the Zahira College Dr. M.A.M. Shukry said Zahira College is having a long history in Sri Lanka Muslims.

He said this institution was established by great Muslim Leaders like late Siddi Lebbe, Wappichchi Marikkar and I.L.M. Abdul Azeez.



During the tenure of late Dr. T.B. Jayah and Dr. A.M. A. Azeez who served Zahira College for 27 years and 17 years respectively was a “golden era.”

Dr. Shukry further said Dr. A.M.A. Azeez was the first Muslim Civil Servant and great Educationist during whose period Zahira had debating Contest Society and students participated in debating contest with other schools.  He personally visit to see College Library very often and took special interest in maintain the College Library.

He also said interfering in any institutions is not good but we must only advise and allow the Principal to work without any hindrance.

Dr. Shukry also emphasized in his speech that 98% attention should be given to Education and parents should encourage their children to read.

Principal of the College M.H.M. Jiffry delivering welcome address said Zahira College had produced very eminent personalities such as doctors, engineers, lawyers, accountants and Moulavis. When Dr.T.B. Jayah assumed duty at Zahira College lot of changes took place for Muslim Education.

Presently also lost of changes happening.

Deputy Principal Rizvi Marikkar, Vice Principal R. Ravindran Board of Governors Secretary Rizvi yas , old boys and parents were also present at this lecture.
